Three new faculty members joined the department in Fall 2016:
Aaron Gember-Jacobson, (BS Marquette University; MS, PhD University of Wisconsin-Madison) comes to Colgate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he recently completed his PhD. His dissertation title is “Novel Abstractions for Data Center Network Management.” Aaron’s teaching specialties include computer science, specifically networking and operating systems; and his research interests center on software-defined networking, network management, and cloud computing.
Madeline E. Smith, (BS Ithaca College, MS Cornell University, PhD candidate Northwestern University) comes to Colgate from Northwestern University where she has been working toward the completion of her PhD. Her dissertation title is “Digital Family Communication and the Transition to College.” Madeline’s teaching specialties include computer science, human-computer interaction, and user-centered design and development. Her research interests focus on human-centered computing and user-centered design, and technology and social behavior (specifically on the use of communication technologies and social media within interpersonal relationships and for support during life transitions).
Darren Strash (BS California State Polytechnic University; MS, PhD University of California, Irvine) comes to Colgate from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology’s Institute of Theoretical Informatics where he was a postdoctoral researcher. His dissertation title is “Algorithms for Sparse Geometric Graphs and Social Networks.” Darren’s teaching specialties include general algorithms, graph algorithms, computational geometry, data structures, discrete structures, and programming. His research interests center on graph algorithms (both theoretical and experimental), computational geometry, graph drawing, subgraph counting and listing, dynamic structures, combinatorial optimization, and heuristic algorithms.
