Concepts covered

The first midterm covers units 1 and 2 including:

• Chapters 1-4 of the textbook
• Types (int, str, float, bool)
• Expressions and assignment
• Writing interactive programs (raw_input, print)
• Loops over strings and numbers
• Accumulator pattern
• Conditional statements (if/elif/else)
• Nested loops

We will not ask any questions about picobot.

Study tips

• Do practice problems.
• Write out your answer on paper (computers are not permitted during the exam!)
• Avoid looking at the solutions until you've spent at least 15-30 minutes trying to write the solution on your own.

Study materials

• Sample exam and solutions: this exam illustrates the format and contains questions that were taken more or less verbatim from past exams. While we reserve the right to deviate from this format, you can generally expect some questions where you read code (like questions 1 and 2) and questions where you write code (like questions 3-5).

• Problems from class (handouts, etc.).

• Additional practice problems and solutions

• Additional problems can be found at the end of each textbook chapter.
