Faculty research in the ACM Internet Measurement Conference '17

Prof. Joel Sommers has two papers in the ACM Internet Measurement Conference in November 2017 (https://conferences.sigcomm.org/imc/2017/), in London, UK. The papers are co-authored with colleagues from the University of Wisconsin, the University of Oregon, and the Internet analytics firm comScore.

One paper (http://cs.colgate.edu/~jsommers/pubs/imc17_ua.pdf), which will be presented by a colleague from comScore, analyzes a large corpus of User-Agent strings which appear in web browser request, and which typically contain information about the browser version, operating system, and other details. Results in the paper include general statistical analysis of User-Agent string characteristics over time and in relationship to different browsers, and an analysis of how identifiable individual users may be based on characteristics observable in a browser’s User-Agent string.

The other paper (http://cs.colgate.edu/~jsommers/pubs/imc17_someta.pdf) describes a new tool call SoMeta to aid Internet measurement researchers in collecting metadata when performing experiments. The metadata can be used by researchers to determine whether there may have been unexpected system or network effects that led to poor measurement quality. The metadata might also be used by users of data that was collected by someone else in order to better understand the context in which the data was gathered.
